Pouto Lighthouse



On the north head of the Kaipara Harbour, approx 2 hour walk from Pouto Point carpark.


The wooden lighthouse built in 1884 over looks the treacherous sandbar at the mouth of what used to be the busiest harbour in NZ.


The lighthouse is situated on a sandstone ledge 278 feet above sea level. It was switched to automation in 1947 the same year the harbour was closed to ships

The historic lighthouse at South Manukau Head (near Awhitu) Relocated in 2006


The site provides excellent views and is also the site of the signal station platform that has been there since 1865


The old site was a few kilometers away and had been in storage since 1986, In its old site it failed to prevent the worst maritime disaster in NZ history - the wreck of HMS Orpheus in 1863, with a loss of 189 men.
